Great book with a wealth of information. Easy to follow tips that walk you through post processing. Great quick reference for those that don’t want to spend a lot of time reading a thick Lightroom manual. The author guides you through several different processes, making it uncomplicated with clear direction. This is my third “Enthusiast’s” book. I really enjoy this format

  2. An Enthusiast’s Guide to Lightroom
    RC Concepcion

RC Concepcion has just authored the latest edition of the Adobe Lightroom Classroom in a Book, a workbook updated every year or two that provides step-by-step tutorials for learning Lightroom from scratch. So when I started Concepcion’s An Enthusiast’s Guide to Lightroom, I expected I might simply be rereading common material. Interestingly, this book is quite different.

Unlike the Classroom in a Book text, An Enthusiast’s Guide to Lightroom is less a training and more book that considers Lightroom as tool to be efficiently utilized. While there are step-by-step instructions in places, Concepcion assumes the reader has some familiarity with the program and then builds on that baseline and to sharpen skills and hone a polished workflow. Instead of tutorials, this book invites a reflection on how one uses Lightroom with Concepcion’s own workflow described and explained. Like Photoshop, Lightroom commonly has multiple methods of achieving goals- understanding that each method has its own pros and cons, Concepcion presents his own considered and proven preferences, empowering the user to make choices based on his own needs.

Like all books covering photographic hardware and software, things change quickly and cause books to rapidly feel dated. Concepcion references all digital cameras as DSLRs- which is no longer the case (especially for pros and enthusiasts who tend to buy into new technologies). And Lightroom itself has evolved to have new abilities, new tools and some updated interface elements. And yet this book is still hugely relevant and refreshingly practical rather than technical. It works well as a companion text to his Classroom in a Book, a reflection on the big picture of Lightroom after learning the incremental, step-by-step, daily routines.

Well-illustrated and written in a relaxed and friendly, Joe-McNally-like narrative, Concepcion has produced a unique and highly effective Lightroom book that will benefit any Lightroom user.
