March is National Women’s History Month. Our blog will be honoring women in photography this month to celebrate women’s contributions to the photography world. Today’s feature is on Jill Greenberg.

Jill Greenberg

If you’re an American consumer of TV or media, you’ve seen Jill Greenberg’s images. Greenberg is an incredibly accomplished photographer, she has shot covers for Time and Newsweek, published five books, and has won American Photos’ “Image of the Year” two years in a row.

Born in Montreal and raised in Detroit, Greenberg began taking photos at a young age, starting with her dog, Plato. Her schooling focused on her passion, and in 1989 she graduated with honors from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Photography. Shortly after, she began working for Sassy magazine, an alt favorite of teens in the 90s.

Greenberg was an early adopter of Photoshop, she began using it to enhance her images in 1990, when it was first released. However, her highly stylized shots are the result of careful attention to lighting, with supplemental flourishes in post production.

Her artwork and passion projects tend to focus on women’s issues and politics. Greenberg received death threats after the release of her work “End Times”, a collection of images of toddlers wordlessly expressing emotion, which many detractors felt was tantamount to child abuse.
