The file extension used by the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). The initials came from eXperimental Computing Facility, a club that GIMP's creators, Spencer Kimball and Petter Mattis, belonged to at University of California at Berkeley. See also GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP)
