Vignetting

The process of putting a vignette around a subject. Vignetting can be done purposefully, as an aesthetic technique in portraits, for example. Or it can be done in error, as when a lens doesn't fully cover the image sensor or when an added device, say a lens shade, cuts into the image. See also vignette
