Tone mapping
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A process of adjusting individual tone values in an image to allow them to be reproduced in a device (such as a monitor or printer) that has a smaller tonal range than that of the original image. Tone mapping is especially useful for printing high dynamic range images (HDRI), created by combining other images. Without tone mapping, the tonal range of the HDRI will exceed the ability to print it. Tone mapping reveals both highlight and shadow detail by compressing all of the tones in the middle. Specialized software is required.
