TWAIN
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
An abbreviation for technology without an interesting name. There are other slight variations on the name, but this version appears to be the most popular. TWAIN is a data communication standard used to allow scanners, digital cameras, and similar devices to communicate with and output data to computers. Typically the devices that use this standard come with a TWAIN software driver that is added to the computer's software. This driver allows the computer software to control the device.
