Sensor
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A device that converts analog information, such as light, to digital information for further processing. The sensor used on a digital camera to create images is called an image sensor. Light falling on the sensor causes it to generate electrical currents that are converted to pixels, which can be displayed to form an image. There are many other types of sensors used for other purposes. Some of these include digital thermometers, digital multimeters, digital devices of all kinds in automobiles, and so on.
