From The Glossary of Digital Photography

A compositional tool used in photography. The image or scene is divided into three vertical sections and three horizontal sections using two vertical lines and two horizontal lines. The four points where these lines cross are usually good spots to have the main subject of a photograph appear, for both compositional reasons and pleasing proportions. The crossing points are sometimes called power points or focus points.
