Raster image processor
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A processor that performs rasterization on an image or document in preparation for printing. The output from a RIP can be a file, such as a PDF file or PostScript file, or a file in another page-description language. There are hardware- and software-based RIPs. A RIP will interpolate the document and make it larger or smaller in resolution as is necessary for the printer. See also PDF; PostScript (PS); page description language (PDL)
