Progressive CCD

A JPEG image that gets
increasingly clear as the resolution builds during downloading. This was an
important feature for larger images in the days when nearly everyone had a
slow, dial-up modem connection. Now that many users have high-speed Internet
connections, progressive JPEGs are not necessary. Not all browsers support this
format, which further discourages its use.
