ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Printer resolution

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

Generally measured in dots per inch (dpi). The larger the number, the higher the printer resolution. A higher resolution means that the printer can print finer detail in images. Printers used for images typically need higher resolution to make those images look 'photo realistic.' Image resolution is generally smaller than printer resolution. As an example, an image with an image resolution of 240 ppi may be printed on a printer with 1,440 dpi. The dots in this case are the actual ink dots and not just the number of pixels the printer is printing.
