From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

The overall quality of the image sensor in terms of size and noise. Less-expensive image sensors (usually found in less-expensive digital cameras) generally have more noise and are smaller, so as to fit onto the smaller image sensor. Given the same number of pixels, those found on a larger sensor typically have less noise and are of a higher quality.
