ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Pigmented ink

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

One of four types of inks that are generally used in inkjet printers. The four types are dye inks (also called dye-based inks), archival dye inks, pigmented inks, and pigment inks. Pigmented ink consists of a mixture of dye and pigment. Dye inks usually have brighter, more vibrant colors than other types of ink. Pigment is longer lasting in light (light-fastness) than dye. Pigmented ink is the result of an attempt to make ink more fade-resistant than dye ink, yet better able to maintain color. It is also more resistant to water and generally more expensive than dye ink. Because pigmented ink contains dye, the dye portion has a tendency to fade over time, leaving its pigment base, but it fades less than does dye ink. See also: pigment ink; light-fastness
