PNG
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
An abbreviation for portable network graphics. A compressed image and graphics format. PNG was designed to be a more versatile format than GIF for use on the Web. It uses lossless compression and generally compresses more than GIF. PNG supports 24-bit color, unlike GIF, which only allows 256 colors. PNG also supports transparency and partial transparency within the file. Not all image-processing and web-browser software support the PNG format. See also lossless; GIF
