PCMCIA card

An abbreviation for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association card. At one time this abbreviation stood for Peripheral Component MicroChannel Interconnect Architecture, but was changed to its current meaning. A form factor for a small card designed to be plugged into a slot on a laptop computer to add additional capabilities such as hard drives and modems. Adapters were made to allow media cards from digital cameras to be plugged into the PCMCIA slot. Now, PCMCIA cards are often simply called PC cards. There are several types of PC cards; they are not all interchangeable.
