From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A sensor that communicates to the camera microprocessor whether the camera is being held vertically or horizontally. The microprocessor uses this information to automatically rotate vertical (portrait orientation) images, relieving the photographer of that duty at a later stage. The images are properly displayed straight from the camera.
