ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Noise measurement

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

The attempt to measure the noise produced in digital images produced by digital cameras. There is some controversy about the ability to measure noise in digital cameras. Because the human eye is more sensitive to some colors than to others, the complexity increases when noise measurement techniques are attempted. Some cameras have noise reduction software built in, and this has to be accounted for as well. Many noise-measurement techniques utilize flat, neutral gray targets. Since most photography is not of flat, neutral gray subjects, and since noise reduction techniques work best on flat areas in an image, measurement techniques that utilize flat, neutral gray targets are not as useful in determining how noisy a camera is when used in real-world photographic situations.
