Metadata
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
Text data used to describe an image. Since the most current method for searching for images is with text searches, the application of appropriate metadata to an image is very important in the ability to find it among thousands of other images. Some metadata, such as exposure information, is added to an image file by the camera at the time of exposure. Other metadata, such as the location of the image or the identity of the people in it, are added by the photographer later.
