Mask
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A tool in Photoshop or other image-manipulation software allowing the user to select part of an image and place it into a layer so that changes to the mask do not affect the image underneath. The created mask will block the image underneath it so that a viewer will see the mask on top of the original image.
