Local Area Network (LAN)
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A small computer network often set up to operate in a home or business. LANs are often based on Ethernet technology. Many computers now come with Ethernet connections built in, so that it is just a matter of plugging the computers together or using a small hub to set up a small, simple network. LANs can also be set up to use Wi-Fi technology for wireless networks. Digital photographers often use multiple networked computers, such as a desktop and a laptop computer, to share data, hard drives, and printers. A LAN, whether wired or wireless, is the method most often used to network computers. See also Ethernet; Wi-Fi
