ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Liquify filter

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A tool or function in Photoshop. Despite its name, the liquefy filter operates more like a tool. When turned on, it allows tools to push pixels around in the image. This can be a very useful and powerful function when retouching portraits. It is easy to push in a bulge here or to stretch something out there. For example, when someone leans against a rail, it pushes their thighs out making them look wider than normal. Using liquefy allows the photographer to push the sides of the thighs back in so they look more natural. When pushing, the pixels are not smeared, just pushed and stretched. The filter can also be used for creative effects or to make interesting or unusual compositions.
