ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Lab color

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

Refers to two different color spaces: LAB (CIE LAB) and L, a, b (Hunter Lab). Note that the asterisks and commas are part of the names of these color spaces. CIE LAB is probably the more popular of the two. Although similar, the two color spaces are derived using different mathematical functions. The purpose of both Lab color spaces is to produce a linear color space. There are conversion techniques to convert images that are in Lab color spaces to and from specific RGB color spaces (such as sRGB and Adobe RGB) and specific CMYK color spaces. The color spaces were developed by the Centre Internationale D'eclairage (CIE). See also CIE; CIE LAB
