LCD
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
An abbreviation for liquid crystal display. A type of display used for computer monitors, televisions, and other devices. An LCD is a digital device made up of pixels, unlike a CRT display. An LCD, which has liquid crystals in a layer between two transparent panels, also uses much less electricity, is thinner, and is lighter than a CRT. These transparent panels polarize the light that passes through them. Electricity is applied, causing some liquid crystals to align and turn dark. A light source behind the panels is blocked in the areas of dark crystals. Each pixel is made up of three sub-pixels that have either a red, green, or blue color filter in front of them. These color filters convert the black-and-white LCD into a color display.
