A programming language. Java is designed to run easily on different types of computer systems. Small programs called Java applets can run on web pages; these account for much of Java's popularity. The Java applet will run on many different browsers and multiple computer systems, including Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX. Java was developed by Sun Microsystems, which allows much of Java to be used at no charge.
