JPEG 2000
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A new compression technique for images developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). JPEG 2000 uses wavelet compression techniques instead of the discrete cosine transforms used in the standard JPEG techniques. JPEG 2000 will produce fewer compression artifacts and produce a higher level of compression than JPEG. It provides the capability to perform either lossless or lossy types of compression. It also provides improved scalability and editing capabilities. At the present time, JPEG 2000 has not been widely accepted, and there are few software applications that can work with it. Fear of legal issues and the underlying patents are the main issue. See JPEG; lossy; wavelet compression; Joint Photographic Experts Group
