ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Inkjet

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A printing technology used for printing digital images. Tiny amounts of ink spray from a nozzle that forms images made up of extremely small ink dots. Commonly, the ink dots can be 1,440 dots per inch to 2,880 dots per inch. Inkjet printers are relatively inexpensive, although the cost of ink typically is not. Even consumer versions of inkjet printers can make fairly high-quality prints. Some caution is needed to create long-lasting prints. Prints can last as little as six months or as long as a number of decades, depending on the printer, the ink, and the paper. Typically, glossy papers do not last as long as matte-finished papers. Pigment inks tend to last longer than dye inks. Special paper designed for inkjet use is usually required for optimum results. See also pigment ink; dye-based inks
