An abbreviation for Internet Protocol address. Also called Internet address. The web address of a computer connected to the Internet. Every computer connected to the Internet must have a unique address so that messages sent to it electronically will be received by the correct machine. The address is in the form of four numbers separated by periods, such as: 68.85.33.61. Each number can have from one to three digits, from 0 to 255 The current version, v4, uses 32-bit addressing. A new protocol, v6, using 128-bit addressing is being developed to allow more addresses and to allow large blocks of addresses to be reserved for specific purposes.
