IPTC Core
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
The more common and short form for IPTC Core Schema for XMP. IPTC Core is a group of metadata used primarily by photographers to describe their images and embed this information within the image file for a number of common file formats. It is the replacement for IPTC Headers, now known as legacy IPTC header information. Because the new IPTC Core utilizes XMP, it is user-extensible (the definition of XMP). This means users can expand the metadata capabilities for their own specific requirements. IPTC Core can be used with Photoshop 7.1 and later versions. Photoshop 7.1 and Photoshop CS require a modification to work properly with IPTC Core. IPTCv4 is the current version of the IPTC Core. When the term IPTC is used by itself, it usually refers to IPTC Core even though it is the abbreviation for the International Press Communications Council.
