ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Hot pixel

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Also called stuck pixel. Each pixel is made up of a red, green, and blue (RGB) element. On occasion, in digital image sensors as well as in LCD monitors, one or more of these elements will adhere permanently. Then, when images (or the monitor) are viewed, there is a red, green, or blue dot in the same location on every image. As cameras age, they will sometimes develop more hot pixels over time. Depending on the brightness or darkness of an image, the hot pixels will be more or less obvious. At the present time, there is no real cure for a hot pixel except to retouch the images. Some software programs, such as Apple's Aperture and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, have a feature enabling the user to retouch one image and then apply the corrections to all images, greatly

speeding up the retouching task.
