ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

High dynamic range (imaging), (HDR or HDRI)

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A technique used to increase the dynamic range of digital images. Typically, the technique involves combining several digital images taken of the same subject with different exposures. These images are usually combined and worked on in higher bit-level processing, using 16-bit rather than 8-bit, for example. Because the dynamic range of HDRI is much greater than that of monitors or prints, the images must be converted using techniques known as tone mapping in order to view them. See also tone mapping
