Hierarchical z

Refers to the hierarchical z-buffer. This buffer is used when processing three-dimensional images to check each pixel and compare its z-value against the z-buffer. Pixels that aren't needed can be thrown out before rendering to save on processing time. See also Hyper-Z; z-buffer
