ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Graininess

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

The visible grain seen in images created from film. In some cases grain is a desired effect, in others it is simply a by-product. In digital photography, noise is the closest equivalent. Usually, noise in a digital image is not very attractive and needs to be avoided. When graininess is desired in digital images, grain can be added by using a filter in Photoshop or in another image-processing program.
