ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Generation

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

In analog photography, each copy increases the generation by one. So if a transparency is copied, the original is first generation and the copy is second generation. One of the major benefits of digital photography is that each digital copy of the original image file is still a first generation. There is no generational loss in copying. A print from a digital original is a second-generation copy.
