Gaussian blur
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A type of blurring used in image-manipulation programs such as Photoshop. Gaussian blur is used for creative purposes to focus attention on other parts of the image. It can be used to reduce noise or detail as well. It produces a very smooth blur, the amount of which can be controlled in the software. The technique uses a mathematical function called a Gaussian distribution, hence the name. See also blur
