Gamma
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
Also called gamma correction. A correction applied to digital imaging devices to correct their inherent nonlinearity to a linear function. This correction is needed to ensure that digital displays, such as CRTs and computer monitors, display the correct brightness of an image. Gamma is used for the most basic form of color management of a display. Each color (red, green, and blue) will have its own gamma correction to provide a linear output. Not to be confused with the mathematical function gamma. In film photography, gamma function refers to the straight-line portion of a film's characteristic curve.
