Fractal image format
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
An image file format that uses fractal mathematics to compress images. Fractal image format is a lossy format that seems to work best on scenic images. The technology has a number of patents on it that limited its popularity as compared to other compression formats such as JPEG, which had fewer legal restrictions. It is much slower at compression than JPEG as well. It has been replaced for the most part by wavelet compression techniques.
