Fractal
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A geometric shape that can be subdivided into shapes similar to the original. Benoit Mandelbrot, a mathematician who was born in Poland, educated in France, and worked in the United States, created the term in 1975. He created fractal geometry and applied it to natural objects such as mountains, coastlines, and plants. Fractal geometry is used to create image compressions. See also fractal image format
