An abbreviation for frames per second. A unit of measure of how fast the camera mechanism can take pictures. Higher fps is especially useful when photographing fast-action subjects. With digital cameras it is important to know how many frames the camera can store in its buffer before it has to stop to record them on a media card, thus limiting the duration of the continuous shooting mode.
