Flat-bed scanner
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A scanner that uses a flat bed with clear glass, instead of a drum, to hold the original. A flat-bed scanner does not require the use of oil to hold the original flat, so it is generally easier and less messy to use. In addition, the original is stationary and the linear CCD sensor array moves to scan it. Usually, the sensor array has three rows of CCDs, with one row each for red, blue, and green. Some flat-bed scanners have a transparency adapter so transparencies can be scanned. Due to the resolution limits of a flat-bed scanner, as with the glass-bed, transparencies are typically not scanned as well as on a dedicated transparency scanner. See also scanner
