File transfer protocol (FTP)
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
Used to transfer information or files from one computer to another over the Internet. Photographers use this technique frequently to upload photographs to a photo lab for printing, to a stock agency, or to a client's computer. Under a typical arrangement, a user, called the client, needs an account and a password to access the other computer, called the server. Sometimes an anonymous FTP is available where the user does not need an account or password to transfer information. See also anonymous FTP
