Extensible metadata platform (XMP)
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
Defines how metadata is stored within images. Because it is extensible, users can add to it. The most common use of XMP is to include information about the image that is added by the use of Photoshop or similar programs and stored within the image file itself. Common metadata that is added include the elements found in the Dublin Core schema. IPTC has developed a set of custom panels that can be downloaded for XMP to store IPTC data through the use of Photoshop CS. Photoshop CS2 has these IPTC panels built in.
