Encryption

The process of hiding information by changing it so that it requires special software to read it. Some portions of proprietary raw digital image files are encrypted so only the camera maker's software will be able to read them. This makes it difficult for third-party software—such as Adobe Camera Raw (ACR)—to read raw files in the way that the camera recorded it.
