Early Z test

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

An algorithm that tests to see if pixels will be visible in the final image. If they will not be, they are discarded. By using this algorithm test early, before sending the image to the rendering engine, efficiency is increased. The early in the name distinguishes it from other tests done later in the process. Early Z tests are used in three-dimensional gaming applications to increase processing speed.
