ESATA
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
An abbreviation for external Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. A technology designed for rapid data transfer to a hard drive. This is important for digital photographers because of the large number of images and huge storage requirements they have. Installing an eSATA card in the photographer's computer enables him or her to add a tower with external hard drives, which are connected through the eSATA card. The rate of data transfer is much higher than is possible with FireWire or USB 1.0 or 2.0. The data transfer speeds are similar to those available with an internal hard drive. The eSATA standard will support cable lengths of up to two meters. The cables tend to be expensive. Two-meter cables are much more expensive than
one-meter cables due to the difficulty involved in manufacturing them.
