ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Dots per inch (dpi)

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A printing term indicating the resolution of the printing process. Dpi refers to the number of printing dots, either halftone dots or inkjet dots, per inch. It is often used incorrectly to refer to image resolution, which is actually measured in pixels or pixels per inch (ppi). The higher the dots per inch, the greater the printing resolution, and the more detail that will show in the final printed image.
