ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Directory folder

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A way to group information, data, or images in a computer. The term directory is equivalent to folder. When images are stored on a hard drive, many photographers will set up a structure made up of folders divided into different levels. Each folder is broken out into additional subfolders, and so on, to make it easier to find a specific image. An example would be to set up a master file, called Photographs, then create files subsumed under Photographs for each year, called 2005, 2006, 2007, and so on. Each of the year files would in turn contain files for each month, such as January, February, and March. Within the monthly files, individual jobs would each get a file. An example layout would be: Photographs > 2006 > December > Jones Wedding.
