Direct memory access (DMA)

Allows devices direct access to system memory without having to go through the CPU. By doing this, the CPU is freed up to continue operating while other functions are occurring. Disk drives and peripheral device drivers—both important in digital photography applications—use DMA. See also CPU; device driver
