Digital ICE

Also called ICE. Stands for digital image correction and enhancement. A technology developed to improve the results from scanned film images by removing or reducing dust and scratches. Digital ICE is built in to the scanner and requires special scanner technology. It is not just software that can be run later on an image. It works by making two scans of the film. The first scan uses visible light, the second infrared light. The infrared light detects the dust and scratches and the ICE program in the scanner subtracts them from the image and fills in the missing data by making calculations based on the surrounding pixels. This makes clean-up post-scanning much easier. Early ICE systems did not work well on Kodak Kodachrome transparencies because of the different composition of the film. More recent scanners and ICE are able to deal with Kodachrome more effectively. Digital ICE, unlike purely software-based corrections, does not soften the image to do the removal.
