ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Diffraction

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

The bending of light rays as they pass through a lens, possibly resulting in the reduction of sharpness . Different wavelengths of light will bend differently, which keeps light rays from the subject from coming together at a single focus point. Diffraction increases as the aperture is reduced (higher f-number) and can become noticeable in a print made at a small aperture.
