ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Device profile

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A file read by color-management software to convert color from one device to an independent color space. The file contains the characteristics of the device. There are three types of device profiles—input, display, and output— for the three different types of devices. I-nput devices include cameras and scanners. Monitors are display devices. O-utput devices are usually printers. Output device profiles take into consideration the printer, ink, and paper. Different combinations of printers, inks, and paper require different device profiles. Some profiles are built into the device driver. Monitors are often calibrated with special software and a hardware device to create a custom profile. See also device driver
